Massive Gamble On Costa Book Awards…Outsider Becomes Favourite
William Hill have seen a rather sizeable gamble on Andrew Michael Hurley’s The Loney winning this year’s Costa Book Award. The book, originally offered at 6/1, was rank outsider according to Britain’s biggest bookmaker, however a gamble spearheaded by a couple of Hill’s most notable thesp punters, has seen it tumble to 6/4 favouritism.
“In fields such as book awards, art awards and architecture awards, there are a couple of people out there who tend to know a bit more than we do and if we see take their gambles very seriously,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. “It certainly looks as though we underestimated Andrew Michael Hurley.”
Costa Book Award: 6/4 The Loney (Andrew Michael Hurley); 3/1 A God In Ruins (Kate Atkinson); 4/1 Invention Of Nature (Andrea Wulf); 5/1 40 Sonnets (Don Paterson); 5/1 The Lie Tree (Francis Hardinge)
